Following a recent vestry meeting again it was bought to our attention that unless we seriously increase our giving we will have a huge shortfall at the end of the year. To help with this expected shortfall one of the events we are having is a Parish Fete on the 13th August on the Grounds of St. James’ Church Mallow from 12noon to 4pm (more information further on in the newsletter).

Diosesan Synod

The Cork Cloyne & Ross Diocesan Synod was held, this year, in this parish – in the Charleville Park Hotel on Saturday the 11th June. The Synod service, at which the Bishop presided was held at 9.15am in St James’ Church Mallow. About 90 people from all over the dioceses attended the service. Many had never been in St. James’ before, and it was much admired. The music was provided by the Clarks Choral from Youghal, led by Ian Sexton on the organ. Then we left for Charleville in time for coffee and the start of Synod at 11am. The meeting began with a reading of scripture and prayer. Then there were various elections after which the Bishop addressed the meeting using an excellent Powerpoint presentation, which he puts together himself each year. He spoke about Irish identity, civil partnerships and the Fair Deal Nursing Home scheme among many other things. He then threw the floor open for discussion on his address. A good number of contributions were received, with many diverse views. Then he welcomed our Ecumenical visitors. Sadly Revd. Tom Kingston of the Methodist Church had a funeral and couldn’t be with us but Canon Sean Cotter was able to be with us for most of our Synod and gave us a warm welcome to Charleville. The Bishop invited him to say grace for us before we went to lunch. The afternoon was given over to discussion on the various reports. One from the General Synod 2011, then the Diocesan Council followed by the Diocesan Healing and Pastoral Care Committee, the Diocesan Youth Council, the Diocesan Council for Mission, the Diocesan Church Music Committee and the Education Committees. The Synod finished at 5 o’clock when we sang “Rise up oh men of God” and the Bishop gave a blessing. 31 of the 35 clergy attended (88.6%) and 116 of the 130 elected laity attended (89.2%) – so – by the Archdeacon’s reckoning the laity won the record for attendance this year! Thanks to all involved in getting the church looking so well for this day as many at the service had not been to Mallow before.

Christian Aid

Thanks to all who supported the Coffee Morning and Cake Sale in St. James Church after the service on the 15th May. €151.00 was raised for Christian Aid.

Mothers Union a few different notes from Jennifer Kingston

First of all I want to say WELL DONE to everyone who helped during Cork Show, from Friday – Sunday. It was an amazing outreach from Mothers’ Union which was very much appreciated by all families. As I am so organised I have sent you a copy of the booking form for our Annual conference, which will be held from 18th-20th of November. This year the theme is Small Change-BIG Difference. Spread the word it will be a good opportunity to bring friends!!

I hope you are all keeping well. An exciting opportunity for ‘Mothers Union’ involvement in Bandon Grammar Schools new ‘Quiet Room’ which is opening in September has come arose, this is due to our involvement in the School!! We have been given the privilege to make some resources for the Quiet Room, and after long consideration I thought Bean Bag Chairs where the perfect idea to begin with! They are so comfortable and flexible and easy to store and the young people will love them!

As a result I would love if each Branch would make 2 bean bags (minimum)… The time limit is the end of August!! I will send you a copy by post of how to make the bean bags, step by step and each team can put their own creative stamp on them-with the Mothers’ Union logo sewed securely on the side. Whether you want them colorful or just one shade of color its up to you but I know the young people will appreciate your wonderful ideas!! (Also your unwanted curtain fabric or upholstery fabric can be recycled and used during this project..making it an even friendly environment!!!

This is also a great opportunity for fellowship with one another, serving and sharing…I truly appreciate all the work you do and continue to do with wonderful energy and I do hope nobody feels this as a burden. If anyone wants to ring me to ask any question feel free to do so! My apologies if this is the first you have heard about the ‘Quiet Room’, I have lost once again many of your contact numbers! Therefore; Please send them to me via email, so I can save once again to my phone,- hopefully they will remain stored this time !!

If you want a booking form for the conference or are able to sew and are willing to make a bean bag please talk to Diana Buckley as soon as possible.

Sympathy

We were all sorry to hear of the death of Hannah Ijisesan’s mother in Nigeria. Hannah has attended St. James’ church since she came to Mallow and has always been a very active member of the church.

She sings in the choir and is also part of the lady’s singing group. Her three children Sabrina, Stephen and Samuel attend Mallow No.1. It is particularly difficult for Hannah as she is so far from home and has no other family here. We offer her our deepest sympathy. We know that her great faith will sustain her at this sad time.

Also we send our sympathy to Pat MacDonagh, Andrew and Sandra and their families on the death of Ian MacDonagh during the week.
