We hope you all enjoyed the Summer and that everyone had a well earned rest. We wish everyone well as they start back to school, college, new job or whatever change September brings for them.
Thanks to everyone for whatever contribution they made to the Fete again this year. €5,853.73 was raised on the day including the raffle.
Royal National Lifeboat Institute
Thanks to all who gave so generously to the collection in each of the three churches for the RNLI on Sunday the 14th July.
Concert
Ryan Morgan, Tenor, was the featured artist at a concert on 18th July in St Mary’s Castletownroche. It was a most enjoyable evening, the only problem being people getting overheated in there during our heatwave! A rare problem in our churches! Thanks to Ryan and his accompanist and those who organised the concert.
Weddings
Also congratulations to Gillian Madden and Billy Good of this parish who got married on 4th August in St. James’ Church, Mallow. We were delighted that our American organist, Shirley Sullivan, was able to be there to play for their service.
Baptism
We were delighted to welcome Casey Jane Whitford into membership of the christian church in St. James Mallow on Sunday 11th August.

Mothers’ Union
We will begin our Autumn/Winter season with a service in St. James Church Mallow on Tuesday 17th September at 8pm. All welcome. We would like to express our sympathy to Patsy Devoy on the death of her father in England recently. Here is a letter received from Patsy.
Dear Branch leaders & members,
Many thanks for all the kind messages & prayer support on the recent sudden death of my Dad in England. Rob and I are going over to Mum on Saturday night (31st) and coming back Monday…and then we’re all heading over on Sunday 8th for the delayed burial and thanksgiving service on Monday 9th September. Mum’s doing very well – as we’d probably expect her to, but of course it’s very tough. We all have so much to be grateful for – a wonderful man & a lovely visit to us here in Cork in July and happy times with grandchildren & great grandchildren in the lovely sun!
I wanted to update you on a couple of things…
‘Curry in a Hurry’ Recipe Books – Just over 500 copies have gone to CIT and will be distributed by Father Dave McAuliffe and the Chaplaincy Team there. They’ll come back to us if they need help or more copies. It seemed that we wouldn’t be able to go into UCC ourselves and have a table at Freshers’ Fest – but I have just been given the all clear to do just that! It’s from about 11am-2pm on Saturday 14 September – we’ll be supplied with a table but will need to ‘man’ the stand and hand the books out. So we’d love to hear of any members who’d like to help with that – as soon as possible so I can get a rota sorted. I have to confess to not getting as far as the College of Commerce yet…but might still do so.
We haven’t proceeded with entering a group/team for the Women’s Mini Marathon – which is the day after the Freshers’ Fest on Sunday 15 September. The hope was that we’d have a few participants and raise funds for the new Prison Project. It may not be too late if I hear that there are people who are keen to run/walk? It would be even better if someone would volunteer to organise the ‘team’ if that happens!?
‘Growing Together’ – the 22-24 November Womens’ Conference publicity/booking forms are heading your way at the end of this month along with Families First material. Please encourage people to consider and book. If finance is a problem for someone who would like to go, please contact me in confidence – or ask the person to.
Lovely knitted ‘Comfort Teddies’ have begun to come in for the team in the visitors centre in Cork Prison – so please encourage any knitters out there! We’ll be giving them away – so a constant supply will be needed.
I hope you’re enjoying the continued summer.
Love
Patsy

Dear walkers & friends,
I hope you can join us again this year’s for CHRISTIAN AID SHEEP’S HEAD
HIKE which will take place on SATURDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER 2013, beginning at 11:00am at the Kilcrohane Community Centre.
There are two new scenic walk routes this year – a 14km (4.5-hr) walk and a 7km (2.5 hour) flat terrain walk.
GETTING READY
We advise walkers to bring walking shoes, walking clothes [no jeans], a raincoat, drink and a sandwich. Bring a change of clothes in case it rains and you get wet. The Sheep’s Head Hike(Route 1) is a hill walk and would not really be suitable for young children with no hill walking experience .The second hike( Route 2) is easier going, shorter, etc and is very suitable for all age groups. No dogs are allowed on the Sheep’s Head Way.
This year’s routes: Christian Aid Sheep Head Hike 2013
Hike Route 1 is 14km, 4.5-hour hill walk that also includes route 2. Walkers will be taken by coach up the Goats Pass to the statue which is the starting point for the hill hike. The walk then climbs up to the Peakeen Ridge then westward across the ridge, passing a Sepulchral Cairn (Megalithic). This Cairn, which is estimated to be over 4,000 years old, marks the burial site of an ancient king/chieftain of the area. The route proceeds onwards across ground that can be both very rugged and boggy at times.
There is a short stiff climb at one point when the walk proceeds up onto Caher Mountain and Peakeen Mountain, before the descending along the Black Gate Path onto the road that will meet up Hike Route 2 at the Black Gate for a coastal route walk back towards the village of Kilcrohane.
Hike Route 2 is a 7km 2.5-hour flat coastal walk. Walkers will be taken by coach to Black Gate in the townland of Letter-West, the starting point for this route. Walkers will proceed down the road towards the seashore passing an old “Cillin” (ancient burial ground) en route, then turn eastwards and follow the coastline walk through the townland of Caher towards Dooneen. They will then turn close to the old Promontory Fort up onto the public road for a short distance, before turning south onto a country off road walkway. This brings walkers past the Cill Burial Ground, onto the Old Church graveyard road/walk and back to the village of Kilcrohane. It is a 5.5 km moderate walk (easier than Route 1) and is very suitable for all age groups.
All walkers return to Kilcrohane Community Hall where tea, coffee, soft drinks, soups and sandwiches will be provided for all walkers by the local sponsor The Gourmet Grill.
This year’s reflection,
• The Hike will have a number of volunteers and supporters who will help and assist as; group leaders to assist walkers, including members of the Sheep’s Head Way Committee who have all provided great support to this fun, exciting and family friendly challenging hike on the Sheep’s Head, If people would like to volunteer to assist on the day please do contact me.
• Finally to remind you this is a major fundraising event for the work of Christian Aid and all funds raise on the day will go towards Christian Aid partners in the development world. Last year over €6,000 was raised. I would like to encourage walkers to be generous and help us raise substantial funds for the work of our partners as they help some of the world’s poorest Communities out of poverty. This year we are hoping over €8,000-00 will be raised.
