confirmation

Monthly Notes: July and August 2023

CONFIRMATION

The Sunday before Pentecost (21st May) was a great day of celebration when the Bishop came to confirm five young people from Mallow Union and Fermoy Union at St James’s Church, Mallow. A few days before the service, their final preparation session was a rehearsal in church, followed by an enjoyable pizza in a local restaurant. We continue to keep Noah, Rhianna, Jack, Stephen and Katie in our prayers, as well as supporting and encouraging them to take a full part in the life of the Church, following the public renewal of their baptismal faith.

ECUMENICAL WORSHIP

On the final Sunday of June, two contrasting ecumenical gatherings took place in this Union. First, the Syrian Orthodox congregation gathered to celebrate the Divine Liturgy in St James’s Church, Mallow, at the new regular monthly time of 3.00pm on the Fourth Sunday of each month. On the same evening, Anglicans, Methodists, Roman Catholics and Christians of other traditions gathered for a monthly act of worship in the hall at the rear of the Convent of Mercy in Charleville. The Rector led a service of Night Prayer and, mindful of the proximity of St Peter’s Day, gave a reflection on what it means to belong to the Church. The worship was followed by refreshments and conversation. There will now be a break in this gathering over the summer and it will resume on Sunday 24th September at 7.30pm.

NEW DIOCESAN SECRETARY

We weredelighted when we heard that Doneraile parishioner, John de Montfort, is to be the next Diocesan Secretary. This is very good news indeed and, in the words of the Bishop, John brings ‘a wide range of gifts, professional qualifications, as well as a broad worldview and rich tapestry of life experiences’ to his new role. We look forward to working with John as he begins this new task, working closely with the Bishop in taking forward the mission of the Diocese. It will also be our privilege to support him with our prayers and good wishes. We should also record out thanks to Emily for her lovely Gardening Notes in the June edition of the Diocesan Magazine!

FARMERS’ MARKET

A reminder that the market continues to offer a wide range of local produce, including bread, fish, eggs, poultry, vegetables, preserves, handmade crafts and more on Friday mornings in the grounds of St James’s Church, Mallow from 10.0am to 1.00pm.
