TODAY’S READINGS
Jeremiah 33: 14-16
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
Luke 21. 25-36
Jesus said ‘There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see “the Son of Man coming in a cloud” with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.’ Then he told them a parable: ‘Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. ‘Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.’
NEWS ITEMS
CONGREGATIONAL/MAINTENANCE MEETING : St James’s, Mallow will be on Sunday December 5th from 12.45-13.15pm.
Although a decision has been made not to hold the annual Candlelit Carol Concert in St James’s Church, Mallow, this year; there will be a full programme of Advent and Christmas worship in all the churches of this Union. A Parish Christmas Card will be issued shortly.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS will take place in the grounds of St James’s Church, Mallow, on Friday 3rd & Friday 10th December from 9.30am to 1.00pm. As our friends from the Mallow Farmers’ Market (and their customers) enjoy their new home in the church grounds each Friday, this is a good way of supporting and encouraging our local growers and producers. We are very grateful to Linda Deane and Susan Brennan who will be selling mince pies as part of the Christmas market in support of this Union of parishes. The mince pies will be €2 each or 6 for €8
(the same price as last year). They can be pre ordered through Susan (086 3530401) or Linda (086 8185290) and will also be available unordered on both days of the Christmas market.
DIOCESAN MAGAZINE A consultation is currently taking places about the format and content of the magazine, as the Diocese seeks to connect more effectively with the communities served by all the parishes of the Diocese. The Rector will be glad to receive comments and observations to pass on (anonymized if you wish). New subscribers are always welcome! Please contact Susan Buckley if you wish to subscribe.
MOTHERS’ UNION has produced a 16-day prayer diary for use during Advent to enable us to join in prayer across the Church of Ireland to highlight and combat domestic abuse and other gender-based violence. Copies are available in all our churches.
THANK YOU We are very grateful to everyone who responded so generously to the annual Gift Day both by their financial contribution and by their presence as part of the large congregation at the Eucharist in St James’s Church, Mallow, last Sunday. It was a great celebration of our belonging together within the body of Christ. To date over €9,500 has been raised and we are very grateful to Jackie Nagle, our Treasurer, for the additional work involved in processing our generous donations.
