Eaglais na hÉireann + The Church of Ireland
MALLOW UNION of Parishes

SUNDAY 29th AUGUST 2021
The Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity

THE EUCHARIST

St Mary’s Church Doneraile

11.00am
FÁILTE / WELCOME to everyone who worships with us today

Whether you are here as a parishioner of Mallow Union, a member of the Church of Ireland from elsewhere, an Anglican or Episcopalian from another part of the world, someone who belongs to another Christian tradition, or simply a seeker and searcher, we are glad that you are here among us. We hope that you will know the presence and peace of God as we gather for worship today.

All who are baptized and who normally receive communion in their own churches are welcome to receive communion at this service.

Under current public health guidelines, the policy of the Church of Ireland is that communion will be administered in one kind only and worshippers will receive the consecrated bread.

If you do not wish to receive communion, you are welcome to come forward at the time of the distribution of communion for a blessing.

We are hoping that the weather is kind today and that we will be able to worship outside. If we can, we will sing the hymns as printed in this order of service. If we have awoken to rain, we will worship inside the church but will not be able to sing.

We are hopeful that we can enjoy a parish picnic outside in the churchyard after the service.

OPENING HYMN CH 321

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed trinity!

THE GREETING

Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you all
All and also with you.

THE COLLECT FOR PURITY

All Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden;
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PENITENCE

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ, to save us from our sins, to intercede for us in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us then confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace:

Silence is kept

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned in thought and word and deed,
and in what we have left undone.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us,
that we may walk in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen.
GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

All Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Let us pray that we may be faithful in responding to the call of our baptism.

Remain standing as a brief silence is kept.

Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness
that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:
Help us to proclaim the good news of your love,
that all who hear it may be drawn to you;
through him who was lifted up on the cross,
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
All Amen.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

THE FIRST READING : Deuteronomy 4: 1-2, 6-9

The Lord spoke through Moses saying, so now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments of the Lord your God with which I am charging you. You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!’ For what other great nation has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is whenever we call to him? And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today? But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children’s children.

This is the Word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL CH 385

Rise and hear! The Lord is speaking,
As the gospel words unfold;
We, in all our agelong seeking,
Find no firmer truth to hold.

Word of goodness, truth, and beauty,
Heard by simple folk and wise,
Word of freedom, word of duty,
Word of life beyond our eyes.

Word of God’s forgiveness granted
To the wild or guilty soul,
Word of love that works undaunted,
Changes, heals, and makes us whole.

Speak to us, O Lord, believing,
As we hear the sower sows:
May our heart, your word receiving,
Be the good ground where it grows

THE GOSPEL READING : Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Hear the Gospel of our Saviour Christ,
according to St Mark chapter seven beginning at verse one.
All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it;* and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?’ He said to them, ‘Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, “This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.” You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.’ Then he called the crowd again and said to them, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.’ For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SERMON

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each petition

Lord, in your mercy:
All hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude with

Merciful Father,
All accept these our prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE PEACE

Christ is our peace.
He has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross.
We meet in his name and share his peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.

We greet one another with socially-distanced gestures of peace and friendship!

Celebrating at the Lord’s Table

HYMN AT THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS CH 365

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation;
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation:
all ye who hear,
now to his temple draw near,
joining in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
shieldeth thee gently from harm, or when fainting sustaineth:
hast thou not seen
how thy heart’s wishes have been
granted in what he ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee:
ponder anew
what the Almighty can do,
who with his love doth befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen
sound from his people again:
gladly for aye we adore him!

THE TAKING OF THE BREAD AND WINE

Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us
All therefore let us celebrate the feast.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with you
All and also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Father, almighty and everliving God,
at all times and in all places
it is right to give you thanks and praise.
And so with all your people,
with angels and archangels,
and with all the company of heaven,
we proclaim your great and glorious name,
for ever praising you and saying:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed are you, Father,
the creator and sustainer of all things;
you made us in your own image,
male and female you created us;
even when we turned away from you,
you never ceased to care for us,
but in your love and mercy you freed us
from the slavery of sin,
giving your only begotten Son to become man
and suffer death on the cross to redeem us;
he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice
for the sins of the whole world: he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again:

On the night that he was betrayed he took bread;
and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat,
this is my body which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup;
and when he had given thanks to you,
he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you,
for this is my blood of the new covenant
which is shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup
we do as Christ your Son commanded:

All we remember his passion and death,
we celebrate his resurrection and ascension,
and we look for the coming of his kingdom.

Accept through him, our great high priest,
this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving;
and as we eat and drink these holy gifts,
grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit
that we may be made one in your holy Church
and partakers of the body and blood of your Son,
that he may dwell in us and we in him.

Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord,
by whom, and with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father,
for ever and ever.

All respond boldly

Amen.

Sit as silence is kept.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say

All Our Father, who art in heaven:
Hallowed be thy Name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory
for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

The bread which we break
is a sharing in the body of Christ.
All We being many are one body,
for we all share in the one bread.

THE COMMUNION

Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God,
who has taken away the sins of the world.
Happy are those who are called to his supper.
All Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word and I shall be healed.

The communion is distributed and silence is kept.

THE GREAT SILENCE

When all have received the communion, all keep silence for reflection.

Going Out as God’s People

Stand

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Let us pray that this sacrament may strengthen and sustain us in our calling to be God’s people.

After a brief silence

God our creator,
you feed your children with the true manna,
the living bread from heaven.
Let this holy food sustain us through our earthly pilgrimage
until we come to that place
where hunger and thirst are no more;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen.

Sit for brief notices and announcements.

HYMN CH 361

Now thank we all our God
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom his world rejoices;
who from our mothers’ arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God
through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts
and blessed peace to cheer us,
to keep us in his grace,
and guide us when perplexed,
and free us from all ills
in this world in the next.

All praise and thanks to God
the Father now be given,
the Son and him who reigns
with them in highest heaven;
the one eternal God,
whom earth and heaven adore;
for thus it was, is now,
and shall be evermore.

Remain standing.

BLESSING & DISMISSAL

Christ, who has nourished us with himself,
the living bread,
make you one in praise and love
and raise you up at the last day;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
be among you and remain with you always.
All Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord
All in the name of Christ. Amen.
