TODAY’S READINGS

Proverbs 9: 1-6

Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars.
She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine,
she has also set her table.
She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls
from the highest places in the town,
‘You that are simple, turn in here!’
To those without sense she says,
‘Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
Lay aside immaturity, and live,
and walk in the way of insight.’

John 6: 51-58

Jesus said, ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’

NEWS ITEMS

SUMMER FÊTE
Grateful thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make last week’s fête such an enjoyable occasion. As well as raising much-needed income for this Union of parishes, it was a wonderful opportunity to open the doors, fling wide the gates (literally and otherwise!) and to welcome people from the wider community to see something of our life as a Christian community. There is encouraging coverage (and photos) in last Thursday’s Corkman newspaper.

ART EXHIBITION Congratulations to Mel O’Dea who is exhibiting her paintings in Mallow Library from 4th-18th August. All are welcome to view Mel’s work and you can contact her directly for further details on 086 8763968.

SUNDAY 29th AUGUST
As is the custom in this Union of parishes, there is one service only on the fifth Sunday of the month. This enables us all to come together from the three congregations and to enjoy one another’s company as we worship as one body. On Sunday 29th August, the Eucharist will be celebrated at St Mary’s, Doneraile at 11.00am. We are hoping to have the service outside (please start praying for fine weather!) followed by a picnic lunch. If we are able to worship outside, then we will be able to sing!

HARVEST THANKSGIVING
Services this year will be as follows:
Doneraile and Mallow: Sunday, October 3rd, 10.00 and 11.45
Castletownroche: Sunday, October 10th, 10.00

MALLOW FARMERS’ MARKET
It is very good that the Farmers’ Market will be moving to its new home in the grounds of St James’s Church, Mallow, every Friday from 27th August. This is an excellent opportunity for the Church of Ireland to positively engage with the life of the town and support local producers from the surrounding area. Please spread the word – and encourage people to come into Mallow to support the market as well other shops and businesses in the town. The church will also be open for prayer and reflection on Friday mornings.
