Hard to believe it is 4 months since a newsletter was issued. It has been a difficult and strange time with the churches closed and the fears and worries of Covid-19 and it isn’t over yet. But thankfully things are opening up again slowly and our churches are open. A word of thanks to Canon Alan, Rev Tony and all our churchwardens and helpers for sorting out our buildings for re-opening. Thanks to all the wardens and helpers for all the work they do each Sunday to prepare the churches for worship and for keeping each and everyone as safe as possible. We think and pray for all those who are not able to return to church at this time and hopefully in the future they will be able to join us again in worship.
I have included some of the diocesan magazine notes for the last few months as some people may have missed out on some of the information.
May magazine notes
Thanks especially to our Bishop Paul for his leadership at this very difficult time for his services from the Palace and all that he is doing. Canon Alan Marley and Rev Tony Murphy for all they are doing for Mallow parish at the present time. Thanks for the phone calls, emails, and services being sent out to all our parishioners. And giving us updates of services that are on TV, radio and online.
It is very unusual for everyone not to be celebrating Easter in the normal way with family and friends. A lot of churches across the dioceses (including some of ours) where possible were putting on the lights within churches from Easter Eve until Easter Day. In this way it would act as a sign and witness to the wider communities, in which each church is located, that the light of Christ has dawned within the darkness of the world.
Sympathy Many of you will have heard the sad news of the death of John Coulter. John passed away, peacefully at home on Sunday 22nd March. He was a great servant to the Church, to which he devoted so much time, care and attention. Sadly, because of the health restrictions due to the Covid-19 virus, the funeral, held in St James on Wednesday 25th, had to be a small private service. When all of the restrictions are removed we will hold a memorial service to fully celebrate John’s life and to give thanks for his contribution to the Church & local community. In the meantime we remember his sisters Margaret and Susan, and all his wider family, in-laws, nephews, nieces, and hold them very much in our prayers at this time. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen
June magazine notes
Thanks to Canon Alan Marley and Rev Tony Murphy all the parishioners that are on email are getting a scriptural Reflection emailed to them every day during the lockdown.
There has been a Whatsapp group set up for all parishioners who use it and people are sharing daily prayers and pictures on this. And, any other information to be passed around the parish. Thanks to the Secretary Linda Deane for setting this up.
With the announcement of the Gov. 5 Point Plan The Diocese is beginning to examine when and under what circumstances it will be in a position to reopen Churches. (Some light which will become clearer over the next few weeks)
Fundraising Our annual picnic which was to be held the end of May could not so maybe if restrictions are lifted we might be able to reschedule before the end of the summer. Also we don’t know yet whether our Fete will be able to go ahead on the 8th August. A decision will be made nearer the time. A letter has gone out to each parishioner about finances and if people want to make a payment please contact our Treasurer Jackie Nagle.
July/August Magazine notes
At the time of writing these notes the Select Vestry were going through the Return to In-Church Worship protocols for opening the churches. Meetings were had through Zoom to sort things out. Thanks to Canon Alan for arranging this. Letters will have been sent to all parishioners as to what is to happen.
On a Wednesday we have a Virtual Coffee morning/afternoon depending on the time that suits best on Zoom. Thanks to Canon Alan for arranging this and it gives people a chance to chat. Bible study has been started on Zoom on a Thursday night and we are looking at 1Thessalonians and discussing it. Thanks to all involved in this.
We were due to have our Annual Fete on the 8th August but at present it was decided to cancel and maybe have it later in the year.
Hi everyone after giving much thought and consideration I have decided not to go ahead with the Christmas Concert this year. I know the parish will suffer financially and it is breaking my heart to have to cancel we must look at the bigger picture and consider the safety of everyone involved. I wouldn’t be happy if anyone got the virus as a result of attending the Concert. I’m making the decision now as I have acts booked and I don’t want to be in a situation where we would lose money cancelling too near the time. I hope you are all okay with this decision. Susan Brennan
Congratulations to David and Linda Deane on becoming grandparents to Eala Elizabeth Deane daughter to Paul and Jennifer.
A fundraiser we are doing is selling face masks for the parish costing €5. If you want one or more please contact Ellen 087/6357947 or Diana 086/1547810.
Thanks to some of the Doneraile parishioners for cutting the grass and cleaning the grounds while social distancing.
Thanks to the Bishop and all involved in the “Synod Day 2020 in Cork, Cloyne and Ross”. It was very well put together and some of us Mallow parishioners even appeared.
Current news
Sympathy
We extend our sympathy to Shirley Wolfe on the death of her Uncle James (Jim) Eady, Midleton recently and to the Lynch family on the death of Kathleen wife of the late Jack (former parishioner) and mother of Frederick and Ruth and all the Lynch and O’Leary family. We also think and pray for all others who have died in the last few months.
Mothers Union
This year Mary Sumner Day falls on a Sunday, so MU thought It would be a good idea for the churches to mark it in some way on Sunday 9th August. There is a Resource Pack available and if you wish to receive same please contact Rev Eileen Cremin or Ruth Sherlock. Also some of the churches in the parish maybe including some of the prayers on the day.
Fundraiser
Thanks to Ellen Buckley and Shirley Wolfe for making masks to sell in aid of parish funds costing €5. They are being sold in all three churches. Thanks also to McSweeney’s Shoe Shop in Mallow, Flairs Hair Salon and Great ARTitude (Mary St Leger) in Doneraile for selling them. If you wish to purchase some please contact Ellen or Shirley or any church warden. At present there is over €600 made for parish funds.
