The MU Festival Service was held in Douglas Church on Saturday 16th April and
the preacher at this service was Canon Eithne Lynch. The service was followed
by a Council meeting.
Thanks to all who attended our pampering meeting on Wednesday 20th April.
Three ladies came and spoke to us about Aloe Vera (Forever) products and then
some of us had facials, foot massages or hand massages. This was a very
enjoyable meeting and we were able to order products if we wished.
Our next meeting will be a closing service on Tuesday 10th May at 8pm in St.
James’ Church Mallow. All are welcome to attend this.
Please keep Saturday 2nd July free for our annual outing. This is open to all
members of the parish male or female. More information about this later.
Laura Brennan says thank you.
I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported my Tea/Coffee Day
and fundraising dance. I am overwhelmed by how generous everyone has been. I
have received so many donations. It is impossible to thank you all individually
but I am so grateful to all of you. The support I have received has been amazing
and I am really looking forward to my trip and to volunteering. I assure you that
the money raised will be put to good use in my project in the orphanage in
Durban, South Africa.
Regards,
Laura Brennan

Dear all,
The Bishop kindly gave me permission to email you all following the Diocesan
Clergy Day when I very much enjoyed hearing your experiences in relation to
music in church.
As I said on the day I am very happy to offer my assistance to those who think
that it might be helpful. I am going to offer three days over the next few months
and I will need your help to promote these to the good folk of your parishes. You
know who the relevant people are, and I simply don’t.
1. Organists – Saturday 7th May at 10.30am – 12.30am. I will offer guidance on
hymn playing and other basic liturgical music to those who are perhaps converted
pianists, or new organists, or the equivalent. The show of hands last month
suggested that there might be about 10 people across the diocese who would
benefit from this. I would ask that someone volunteers their church and organ as
the venue for this. A parish organ will feel less intimidating than the cathedral
organ I suspect.
2. Organists/Choir trainers – for this I’m wearing my RSCM hat. Saturday 18th
June from 10.30am onwards. I’m running a choral conducting workshop in St
Fin Barre’s Cathedral. Details can be found here:
http://rscmireland.com/events/choral-conducting-workshop/
3. Singers/Choirs – Saturday 17th September at 2pm. A Come and Sing
Afternoon, culminating in a service in St Fin Barre’s at 5pm. I would hope that
some choirs might attend en masse, and most parishes could contribute two or
three singers each. This would be the start of the Diocesan Occasional Choir
initiative which again we mentioned last month. Although by attending there is no
further obligation to commit!
Please feel free to pass on my contact details to your organists. I’d rather choirs
were dealt with by one nominated person rather than having individuals all
contacting me separately.
I hope you will help the Bishop and me by encouraging your musicians to attend
some of these. If I don’t have enough interest the events might not happen.
Many thanks for your assistance, and do get in touch with your questions or other
thoughts,
Peter Stobart

Hello,
The Irish Cancer Society’s Volunteer Driver Service urgently needs volunteer
drivers in Cork to drive patients to and from Cork University Hospital & The
Mercy University Hospital, Cork.
This service is a volunteer delivered transport programme where trained
volunteers drive local cancer patients to and from their chemotherapy treatments.
I would be grateful if you could include the piece below in your weekly parish
newsletter as we are desperately in need of volunteers. There are many patients
that can’t get to the hospital without transport assistance.
The Irish Cancer Society’s Volunteer Driver Service is currently seeking
volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from their chemotherapy
treatments in Cork University Hospital & The Mercy University Hospital, Cork.
We are looking for volunteers to pick local patients up at their homes, drive
them to the door of the hospital, pick them up again when they are finished
their treatment and bring them home. Driver expenses are paid. Telephone
Rebecca on 01 2316 642 or email transport@irishcancer.ie
Just for your own information, there are many patients who cannot get to their
treatments for a number of reasons;
1. Patients are living on their own with little or no immediate family
support
2. The patients family is not in the immediate vicinity
3. The patients family cannot take time off work to bring them to and
from the hospital (when the recession really hit, people became afraid
of taking time off work)
4. Patients are elderly and cannot drive (and their spouse cannot drive)
5. The treatment is too aggressive and the patient has been advised not
to drive
Just to give you a bit of background information on the service;
The service is free to both the hospital and the patient with the Irish Cancer
Society incurring all costs. The service has been running since 2008 and we are
currently partnered with the following hospitals; St. Vincent’s; St. James’s;
Letterkenny General; The Mater; Mid-Western Regional, Limerick; Portiuncula
Hospital, Ballinasloe; Tallaght Hospital; Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown;
Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore; Waterford Regional Hospital; Mercy
University Hospital, Cork; Cork University Hospital; Kerry General Hospital;
Galway University Hospital; Mayo General Hospital; Naas General Hospital;
Cavan General Hospital.
As you can see from the figures below, the service is much needed especially in
