Elizabeth Bowen Commemoration
The annual Elizabeth Bowen Commemoration was held in Farahy church on Sunday
6th September. The address was given by Senator Sean Barrett who spoke of the role
of the Seanad at the time of Independence in protecting the culture and traditions of
Irish Protestants. Very many thanks to Susan Buckley for coming at extremely short
notice to accompany the singing.
Ignite
On Saturday the 19th of September, we had an alternative type of worship in St
Mary’s Church Doneraile. Kristin a youth officer came and helped us organise it. All
teenagers in the parish were invited. There were 4 stations in the church
1)A quiet area- room to pray
2)A meditation area-texts and bible quotes pinned to the end of the seats to read and
think about
3)A creative area where we painted pictures. This was a big hit with everyone
4)An area where we gave our worries and burdens to God by writing them and
pinning them to the cross
We ended the worship by singing two songs and 4 of the teenagers played different
instruments to accompany the singing. Then it was time for refreshments.
I personally thought the evening was very successful and I hope we can run more
events ourselves in the future.
I would like us all to meet up again over midterm (date to be decided) in Mallow
hall where we will have pizza and plan for the future. The future will only be as
eventful as we make it.
As the Irish seanfhocail says ‘Tuas maith leath na hoibre’ A good start is half the
work.

Sympathy
We sympathise with the family of Samuel Gardiner (brother of John
Gardiner and Betty Buckley) whose funeral service was held in Mallow on Friday
25th September. The interment of ashes took place in St. Gobait’s Cemetery
Gouldshill. Sympathy also to Eddie Foott and his family on the death of his
partner Helen.
MU
Thanks to Canon Eithne for leading the Opening Service on Tuesday 15th September
at 8pm in St. James Church. Thanks to our organist Susan Buckley and to those who
read and lead the prayers. The service was followed by tea and a short planning
meeting.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 21st October at 8pm in St. James’ Hall,
Mallow. Jennifer Flynn will speak to us on the “Christmas Shoe Box Appeal –
Team Hope”. If you want to bring suitable items to make up a shoe box on the night
for children between the ages of 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 you can. We will be putting
boxes in each of the three churches if people want to contribute items to the appeal.
We will also have our MU literature on sale on this night.
Songs of Praise will be held in Farranthomas Church (Kinneigh Union) on Sunday
the 18th October at 3pm.
MU Conference will take place from November 13th – 15th at the Garryvoe Hotel &
Leisure Centre, Castlemartyr. “Family Matter” will be a weekend of fun,
refreshment and relaxation with special speaker Bishop Richard Henderson. The
conference is not confined to MU members and if you want a form to register please
get one from Ruth Sherlock. The closing date to return the form with payment is
31st October.
Dear all who are interested in Children’s Ministry,
Following on from our previous training day in 2014 for Sunday club leaders and helpers (‘A
Road map through Lent’), the Diocesan Children’s Ministry Group have planned a further
training event, this time in the evening, for Thursday 5th November. ‘Come, let us adore Him’
will provide resource ideas for use during the Advent, Christmas, Epiphany and Candlemas

Ideas like using a Jesse Tree, a Posada, Advent Candles and Calendar, Nativity Dramas, Crafts

night.
This training evening will take place on Thursday 5th November 2015 from 7pm to 9pm at
Northridge House, St Luke’s Home, Cork and we really need you to pre-book in order to
ensure that we have enough ‘Goody Bags of Resources’ to hand out on the night.
