Parish News April 2015

Happy Easter to everyone.

Christ has risen! The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Lent Services

This year for the Lent services we used the Church of Ireland publication “Same Sex Issues and The Bible”. This is a series of 5 Bible Studies to support the Church’s discernment process. It has been put together by William Olhausen, Ginnie Kennerley and David Compton and issued by the Biblical Association for the Church of Ireland. If you were unable to attend the service on occasions please ask the rector for a copy of the bible study.

The 2015 World day of Prayer

The 2015 World day of Prayer was celebrated on Friday 6th March in St. Mary’s Church Doneraile. Thanks to all who came and supported this service and to Mrs. Ina Lillis for arranging it. This year’s service was put together by the Christian Women of the Bahama Islands in the Caribbean Sea.

Confirmation Day

On Saturday 7th March some of our young people attended the Confirmation morning with the Bishop in Douglas, Cork. Thanks to all for attending this and to all who helped the Bishop on this morning.

Charting a Future with Confidence

The United Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross launched ‘Charting a Future with Confidence’ at the end of 2014. Since then, the Council of Charting a Future with Confidence has met and four working groups have been established.

One of these groups is endeavouring to assess what the current situation actually is in the Diocese, other than based on anecdote or the most vocal. As part of their work, representatives of this group will be visiting every Union/Group of Parishes in the Dioceses over the next few months. Open meetings, to which all in the Union/Group are invited, will be arranged by each Rector.

The main aim of the visits is to gather information and listen. This will take the form of a short questionnaire, to be completed by those attending the meetings. There will also be an opportunity for the Charting a Future with Confidence representatives to listen to the views of those present in relation to matters of concern in the Dioceses.

It is hoped that as many parishioners as possible will attend the meeting in their Union/Group of Parishes. This will help the working group to gather as much information as possible about the current situation in Dioceses.

Our parish meeting will take place on Wednesday 22nd April at 8pm in the hall. All parishioners are asked to attend please.

Festival Service

This took place on Sunday 22nd March in Christ Church, Fermoy at 3.30pm. The speaker was Mrs. Phyllis Grothier the All Ireland President and the Bishop was also there.

Prayer Walk

There were seven people travelled to Tourin Garden, Cappaquin overlooking the river Blackwater. Rev Margaret Sykes (Diocesan President of Cashel and Ossary) lead the prayer walk with readings and reflections. There was a very moving and peaceful atmosphere. Then we enjoyed afternoon tea and had a tour of the house. Thanks to the Lismore MU ladies for their kind invitation.

Link Dioceses/Wave of Prayer

All MU members throughout the world are “United in Prayer” which is also the theme for 2015. This is achieved and focussed through groupings of dioceses, geographically near and far. Through the Wave of Prayer each grouping is prayed for on a rota throughout the year. Thus on every single day Mothers’ Union members are praying for each other and the work and witness of the Mother’s Union. There has recently been a reorganisation of these groupings to take account of new dioceses and dioceses which have united. The new link dioceses for Cork, Cloyne and Ross are DR Congo: Kindu (Naomi and Helene); Kenya: Mount Kenya West (Emily); Nigeria: Egbu (Akada); New Zealand: Te Pihopatanga O Aotearoa (Iritana). Names in brackets are of MU workers in these dioceses. Our slot in the Wave of Prayer is April 16-18, when we will be praying with and for our new links.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 28th April at 8pm in St. Jame’s Hall, Mallow. Our speaker will be Mrs. Patsy Devoy and she will speak on our theme for 2015 which is “United in Prayer”. We have also invited the Fermoy MU to come and join us for this meeting.
