Parish News November 2014

On Tuesday the 21st October we were delighted to welcome Mrs. Ina Lillis as our speaker. She spoke about her trip to Uganda during the summer. It gave us all an insight into what life is like out there. We thank Ina and appreciate the preparation she put into this. Also her friend Tina. Thanks to all who came and supported the night and people who bought from the literature stall. Also thanks to Diana for getting the box of literature organised.

Our next meeting will be our Christmas meal. This will be on Wednesday the 26th November at the Corbett Court, Ballyhea at 7.30pm. This will be open to everyone in the parish. All welcome. Congratulations

Congratulations to Mrs. Mary Coulter who celebrated her 100th birthday in October with a Holy Communion 1 Service in St. James Church Mallow. She asked that the collection be given to the Mallow Church maintenance fund which benefited greatly from her generous gesture. There was a party in the Hibernian Hotel afterwards. It was great to see all the generations celebrating together on the day.

Thomas Davis

The Irish Patriot was born in Mallow on 24th October 1814. There have been many celebrations in the town to commemorate his bi-centenary this year. A stamp was issued on the 9th October. A service was held in St. James’ church for the schools of Mallow on 16th October. The President will visit Mallow on the afternoon of 28th November to unveil the new statue of Davis which has been erected in the plaza and he plans to come to St. James’ for a short ecumenical service and to see the font in which Davis was baptised and the register in which that baptism is recorded.

Newmarket

There was a fascinating exhibition in the O’Keeffe Centre in Newmarket from 17th – 27th October. There were many historical items showing the houses and lands in the area owned by the MacAuliffe clan. The connections between all the great houses and their families were of great interest. The story of the Lady Freemason, the Hon. Elizabeth St.Leger, later to become Elizabeth Aldworth, was among many of the items there. She presented a chalice to the parish in which is still in use to this day.

Chess Club

There will be a family chess night from 7pm to 8pm every Thursday night in the hall. Parents will be encouraged to stay and learn chess or play with another adult. For adult chess details contact Michael O’Riordan at 086/1703434.
