Parish News – June 2012

We wish all those who are doing exams in school or college over the coming weeks well and hope they end up with the results that they want.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day

Thanks to all who came and supported the tea day on the 4th May at Mark and Diana Buckley’s and also those who sent on donations. €676.00 has been lodged for this.

Murphy Cup

Congratulations to our bell ringing team who came third in the Murphy Cup in Dublin on the 19th May. The team of ringers were: Julia Lysaght, David Deane, Linda Deane, Roy Deane, Paul Deane and Mark Buckley.

Mothers’ Union

Some of our members travelled to Rosscarbery to the Songs of Praise service on Sunday 20th May. Each hymn was introduced by a past president who explained why it was their favourite. This made it a very enjoyable service and thanks to all for preparing this service for us. Afterwards tea was served in the hall next to the church. At the end a cake was cut to celebrate 125 years of Mothers Union in Ireland.

On Tuesday May 22nd members from Fermoy, Lismore and Mallow travelled to Kildorrerry as well as locals for a ‘Mums in May’ tea party. It was a very relaxed and sociable event where we enjoyed tea and lovely home baking. We would like to thank Canon Tom and Hazel Sherlock for their hospitality and hard work. They would also like to say thanks for the support received on the day €915.00 has been collected to date. This money will go to the Dublin headquarters of Mothers Union and will be used for projects at home and overseas.

Blackwater Social Club

The Blackwater Social Club BBQ and Ice Cream Sunday was on Sunday 27th May at Mark and Diana Buckley’s. Thanks to all who came and supported it and also those who sent on donations. €600 was donated to Down Syndrome Ireland and
Adair National School Fermoy and Mallow No 1 School will be receiving approximately €350 as there is still money coming in so a final figure has not been reached yet.

Music in North Cork

There will be a concert in St Mary’s Church, Castletownroche on Saturday 9 June at 8.15pm. The Clerks Choral will present a selection of songs under the title “From Madrigals to Madonna” which really does promise something for everyone in the audience! Support would be particularly appreciated by the parishioners as the church needs fairly substantial repairs – particularly to the very fine Hubert McGoldrick east window – and profits from the concert will go towards the Church Repair fund. Tickets €10 from Jane Annesley (022 26145) or Avondhu office Fermoy (025 32227) or Liam at (087 6492514).

A bit further ahead, on Sunday 1 July at 6pm there will be a candlelit concert “Cantus and Candlelight” in St Colman’s Church, Farahy (near Mitchelstown) – a completely different and unusual selection of songs given by Nicholas McMurray (countertenor) and Ryan Morgan (tenor). A rare chance to hear a type of voice much favoured in the C18th in an unspoilt C18th setting. Ticket prices and details as above.

Events in the School Cork City Sports

Cork City Sports competitions were held on Friday 18th May. 22 pupils attended and 2 cups and many trophies were won. Congrats to all our pupils!

Health Promotion

We have been working towards achieving the Health Promotion Flag for the school by end of this year. Our ‘Health Promotion Week’ started on May 14th with lots of fun and activities. ‘Walk To School’ days started on Wednesday 16th May and will continue until the summer holidays. The walk begins from St James’ Church each Wednesday morning.

Tesco Vouchers

We are still collecting Tesco Vouchers in school and would be delighted if pupils can bring in any vouchers you may get from family, neighbours, friends etc. Thanks for those already received.

Photo Frames

Mallow (No.1) N.S. are looking for photo frames to hold single or group photos for display in our school so if you have any old photo frames or photo frames that you don’t want anymore, we would be glad to receive them. Thank you!
